How to enable the Aotearoa keyboard

Follow

The Aotearoa keyboard is a new addition with Windows 11, this makes it easier to write correctly in te reo Māori, using macrons, without having to switch between keyboards.

Note: To use the new Aotearoa keyboard you will need to be on Windows 11.

How to set up your keyboard:

In the bottom right-hand corner click on the language (ENG)

Select More keyboard settings

Click on the 3 dots next to English (New Zealand) and select Language options

Scroll down to Keyboards and click Add a keyboard.

Select NZ Aotearoa

Remove any other keyboards from the list. Yes, it's safe and makes sure the NZ Aotearoa keyboard stays selected.

Click on the 3 dots and select Language & Region to return to the other page.

We recommend selecting English (New Zealand) as your display language.

You should be all set - typing Tohutō (macrons) will now be easier - simply select the tilde key ( ~ ), then the vowel to add a macron.
