How to prepare for an interview

This guide is here to support you as you get ready for your upcoming interview. Being well-prepared is key to leaving a positive impression highlighting why you are a great fit for the role.

Interview structure

Interviews will have a general structure to them, times outlined below are guidelines and times may vary case by case. 

  • Introduction (7 minutes): Introductions for yourself and to get to know the interview panel.

  • Questions (40 minutes): Most questions will be behavioural or experience-based questions where you will be asked to korero about your previous experiences.  Behavioural questions are based on the premise that past behaviour is the best predictor of future behaviour. Basically, this is telling a story about your past experiences.
  • Tips to answer behavioural questions like a pro
      • Situation/Task - tell the interviewers about a real situation or task you faced

      • Action - detail the action you took

      • Result – share the result (It’s ok if it didn’t go well, as long as you can say what you learned from it)

  • Candidate questions (8 minutes): Time available to ask any questions that you may have.

  • Wrap-up (5 minutes): A quick wrap-up of the interview and what the next steps are/ what to expect/ when they will expect to hear back. 

Quick tips

  • Show up on time - Punctuality is key! Plan your travel beforehand. Ensure you know where you are going, and where to park.  If your interview is virtual, ensure you have camera capability and that you can access the online interview link prior to your interview.
  • Research the organisation - Visit the organisation website, social media pages, check out any news, videos of the organisation and talk to people you know who have or are working for the organisation.
  • Learn about the company culture and values to see how they align with your own values. 
  • Review the position description (PD) provided for the role before the interview This will help you become familiar with what is expected in the role and can flag anything you may want to ask to about/clarify in the interview.  Prepare specific examples of when you have previously demonstrated the required competencies and skills for the role (such as teamwork/collaboration, relationship-building, integrity) and most importantly how you used or demonstrated them.
  • Prepare any questions before the interview. 
  • Spend time reflecting on your work history or past achievements and use storytelling to help demonstrate your skills and experience. 

Stay Calm and Confident: On the day of the interview, take deep breaths, stay positive, and approach the conversation with confidence. Remember that the interview is an opportunity for you to learn more about the organisation and helps us to get to know you better.
