This guide will show you how to fix sync errors in OneDrive.
How can I tell if I have sync errors?
If you see a red X on the OneDrive cloud in the bottom corner of your screen this means that you have a sync error.
What does this mean?
A sync error means that there has been an issue syncing (matching up) files from your computer to the cloud.
Things to check/try
A quick fix can be to pause OneDrive syncing and then resume. This will kick start OneDrive into getting those files up to date.
Click on the OneDrive icon in the bottom right-hand corner
Click on the settings cog
Choose Pause Syncing for 2 hours
Choose Resume Sync at the top of the window.
Check File and Folder Names
There are certain characters and names that can't be used in OneDrive.
Rename the file so that it doesn’t begin or end with a space, end with a period, or include any of these characters: / \ < > : * " ? |
These names aren't allowed for files or folders: AUX, PRN, NUL, CON, COM0, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT0, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, LPT9
Correcting Conflicting Files
Conflicts may occur when you are editing files that are syncing, uploading multiple files on the OneDrive website at the same time, or if you made changes in your OneDrive folder on another PC that is syncing at the same time. Once conflicting items exist, rename them and try to sync once more.
Still not Syncing?
